Cathy Barber is a poet/teacher with
California Poets in the Schools
(CPITS) in San Mateo County. CPITS is a statewide organization placing
poets in schools for over forty years. CPITS poets are working poets in
that they are actively writing and publishing their own poetry in
addition to teaching student poets in school residencies. Lessons are
designed to encourage student writing as well as enjoyment of poetry and
enhancement of verbal skills.
“I have had the privilege of having Cathy Barber come to my classroom as a visiting poet to work with my students on writing some of their own poetry. What a pleasure it was to see my students create their own poems and share them with peers so willingly. All the children were interested and engaged. This was a wonderful experience for them.”

Cathy Barber's poetry workshop at Burlingame Public Library was a wonderful addition to our annual Poetry Month celebration. With Cathy's thoughtful guidance, children listened to and talked about poems, and then wrote and read aloud their own verses. The enthusiastic participants even created a group poem in a spirit of good humor and cooperation. Parents and children have asked for more!
